Monrovia, Liberia: At the 2025 Assembly of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), keynote speaker Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine delivered a compelling address on the pervasive issue of corruption within Liberia’s legal system.
She characterized corruption not merely as a flaw but as a profound betrayal that erodes public trust and undermines the rule of law.
In her speech titled “The Sacredness of the Law and the Fight Against Corruption,” Brumskine emphasized the detrimental impact of corrupt practices, stating that they compromise institutional impartiality and convey a dangerous message that justice can be manipulated.
She highlighted instances where bribery alters case outcomes, files disappear mysteriously, or influence supersedes evidence, asserting that such actions inflict deep harm on the justice system.
Addressing an audience of legal professionals, including lawyers and judges, Cllr. Brumskine who is the CMB Law Group (LLC) Senior Partner, underscored the necessity for self-accountability within the legal community. She urged the LNBA to foster a culture where no lawyer is above the law and no judge beyond scrutiny.
She called for the empowerment of disciplinary committees and county bar associations to not only protect but also challenge members to uphold their professional oaths.
Brumskine proposed several practical measures to strengthen accountability and ethical conduct in the legal sector. She named, peer review and mentorship programs, encouraging senior lawyers to mentor younger colleagues in both professional skills and ethical standards.
Others include, active and empowered ethics committees to strengthen disciplinary bodies within the LNBA and county bar associations to handle complaints swiftly and transparently., Courtroom decorum and conduct reporting which will help judges and lawyers to address and report unethical behavior in court proceedings.
Cllr. Brumskine further that continuing legal education with a focus on ethics will support ongoing education that includes real-life case studies to teach lawyers how to navigate ethical dilemmas.
She encouraged legal professionals to embrace accountability, stating that where accountability flourishes, corruption diminishes, and the law regains its integrity. Her address serves as a clarion call for the Liberian legal community to lead by example in the fight against corruption, thereby restoring public confidence in the justice system.
