Monrovia, Liberia: The Recovery of Economic Activity for Liberian Informal Sector Employment (REALISE) Project is set to transform twelve flood-prone communities in Montserrado County, providing much-needed relief and economic opportunities through its Labor-Intensive Public Works (LIPW) component.

Designed to support vulnerable populations, the initiative will engage community members in critical public works projects aimed at mitigating flood risks and enhancing environmental sanitation. Beneficiaries will take part in essential activities such as garbage collection, waste disposal, drainage cleaning, and the promotion of hygiene and sanitation measures.

According to Jerry Godu, the lead for the LIPW component, the project goes beyond short-term employment by offering long-term benefits for participants. “This initiative is not just about providing jobs; it’s about equipping beneficiaries with skills and opportunities that will serve them well beyond the REALISE Project,” he stated. “Along with labor subsidies, participants will receive life skills and employability development training, ensuring they have sustainable pathways to financial independence.”

The REALISE Project operates using a community-driven development approach, emphasizing small-scale, labor-intensive public works and hands-on training programs. The twelve flood-risk communities benefiting from this initiative were identified through close collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency and enumerated by the REALISE Project team to ensure targeted and effective intervention.

As part of its inclusive approach, the project will host a community engagement meeting to present a list of subprojects focusing on climate change adaptation and flood mitigation. Community members will have the opportunity to review and select the initiatives that best suit their local needs, ensuring that the solutions implemented are relevant and impactful.

By integrating employment opportunities with sustainable infrastructure improvements, the REALISE Project aims to foster resilience and self-sufficiency within these flood-prone communities. This initiative is a crucial step toward reducing the impact of seasonal flooding while simultaneously empowering local residents with the skills and resources needed for long-term economic stability.
