Monrovia, Liberia: A group of former Economics students from the University of Liberia (UL), who graduated during the 104th Commencement Convocation, have donated 60 high-quality wooden chairs to their alma mater as part of an effort to ease the ongoing burden of inadequate seating on campus.
The donation, made during an outdoor program held in front of the College of Business and Public Administration, was warmly received by UL officials. The event was attended by members of the graduating class, including their former class president, as well as current students from the Economics Students Association (ESA).
Speaking on behalf of UL President Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Agnes Reeves Taylor expressed deep appreciation for the gesture.
“On behalf of Dr. Maparyan and the University of Liberia administration, we receive this donation with heartfelt gratitude,” Dr. Taylor said. “We are proud of you and the legacy you are building.”
Dr. Taylor, herself a graduate of the UL Economics Department, said she was overwhelmed with pride to see former students taking on meaningful projects that contribute to the university’s development.
“It brings me joy to see our students understand that their legacy should not be shaped by negative perceptions but by initiatives that uplift this institution,” she added.
UL Vice President for Student Affairs, Associate Prof. Sekou W. Konneh, also praised the donation, calling it a model initiative that others should emulate. He urged students to engage in actions that enhance the university’s image and reputation.
“This is the kind of example we want to see,” Prof. Konneh said. “Let us pursue efforts that bring pride and dignity to the University of Liberia.”
He further cited the recent victory of UL student Vashe T. Weah in the Miss Inter-University Pageant as another example of the positive image the university continues to promote.
“And this wasn’t just a beauty contest,” he emphasized. “It was a contest of intellect. That’s what we want UL to be known for.”
The donation by the former Economics students is the latest in a series of alumni-led efforts to support the university and demonstrates a growing culture of giving back among graduates.
