Monrovia, Liberia: In a remarkable achievement for Liberian education, four outstanding young women have been selected to join the prestigious Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Class of 2025. The students—Erian Sackor from Aware International School, and Surie Bility, Melanie Ewurafua Mensah, and Margaret Murray from Innovation Preparatory International Academy (IPREP)—have earned their places among a select group chosen from thousands of applicants across more than 40 African countries.
YYAS, an initiative by Yale University, is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students who aspire to pursue tertiary education and make meaningful impacts as young leaders on the continent. The program offers participants the opportunity to enhance their academic skills, receive guidance on university admissions, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa.
The selected Liberian scholars will attend the Residential Leadership Summit at Brookhouse School’s Karen Campus in Nairobi, Kenya, from August 9 to 17, 2025. During this nine-day summit, they will engage in rigorous academic programming, develop critical leadership skills, and foster cross-cultural understanding with peers from various African nations.
Catherine Togba Woyee, Executive Director of Crimson Institute, expressed immense pride in the students’ accomplishments. “Their hard work, dedication to academic excellence, and commitment to making a positive impact in their communities have been recognized by one of the world’s leading universities. This is a testament to their potential to lead and shape the future of Africa,” she remarked.
Crimson Institute, based in Liberia, is dedicated to empowering students by equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in college and beyond. The institute offers a variety of services, including SAT preparation, language testing, scholarship support, after-school programs, and dual enrollment opportunities for students interested in pursuing higher education.
The Yale Young African Scholars Program aims to empower young African leaders by providing them with tools to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the continent. While the program covers the cost of the residential component, students and their families are responsible for arranging and funding their travel to Nairobi, Kenya.
These four Liberian scholars are eager to embark on this transformative journey, aiming to leverage the knowledge and skills gained from the YYAS program to effect lasting change in their communities and beyond.
