Liberia Awaits MCC Decision on Compact Eligibility as Finance Minister Dispels Funding Rumors

Monrovia, Liberia: Liberia’s Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, has announced that the Board of Directors of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is set to meet early next week to determine whether Liberia’s eligibility for a new MCC Compact will be reaffirmed.

Speaking to reporters in Monrovia on Monday, Minister Ngafuan confirmed receiving official communication from Alicia Robinson-Morgan, the MCC’s Deputy Vice President for Compact Operations, indicating that the board’s decision is forthcoming.

“We are hopeful and optimistic. The love that individual board members of the MCC have for Liberia gives us confidence that this reaffirmation will be successful.” Ngafuan stated.

Ngafuan, however, addressed media reports suggesting that Liberia stands to receive $500 million under the new Compact. He clarified that while discussions are advancing positively, no specific funding figure has been disclosed by the MCC.

“The MCC has not announced any definitive amount. Those figures being circulated are speculative and not grounded in official communication.” He emphasized.

The Minister credited recent diplomatic efforts by President Joseph Boakai for the positive momentum surrounding the Compact talks. He noted that the President’s high-level engagements during his recent visit to the United States significantly contributed to pushing the conversation forward.

If reaffirmed, the new Compact could unlock substantial development opportunities for Liberia, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and governance reform.
