LRA, PUL Train Journalists to Boost Tax Reporting

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), in collaboration with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), has concluded a two-day tax reporting workshop for 30 journalists from Montserrado and Margibi Counties, representing print, broadcast, and online media outlets.

Themed “Enhancing Tax Awareness & Public Engagement Through the Media,” the training aimed to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills to accurately report on tax-related matters, thereby promoting voluntary tax compliance nationwide.

Over the two days, participants will explore topics including customs operations, types of taxes, the LRA’s roles and responsibilities, domestic tax administration, and development reporting.

Speaking on behalf of LRA Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah, the Authority’s Communications, Media & Public Affairs Manager, Danicius Kaihenneh Sengbeh, described the initiative as part of a new era in building an informed network of media professionals capable of telling Liberia’s tax story with accuracy and depth.

“No journalist can effectively report on an issue they do not fully understand. This training underscores the critical role journalists play in boosting public awareness, promoting voluntary compliance, and ultimately strengthening revenue mobilization for national development.” Sengbeh said.

Sengbeh noted that 2025 marks a milestone year for LRA-media engagement, with this being only the second such training in the Authority’s 11-year history and the second conducted this year.

PUL President Julius K. Kanubah, speaking at the event, emphasized the persistent gap in media literacy on tax issues, calling the workshop a pivotal opportunity to bridge those knowledge deficits.

“With low literacy on tax matters within the media, this training is crucial for fostering accurate, transparent, and credible reporting, urging participants to uphold professional integrity in their work. Kanubah said.

The workshop, fully sponsored by the LRA, is part of the PUL’s broader mission to enhance the capacity of journalists across Liberia. Organizers believe the training will strengthen reporters’ understanding of tax policies, media ethics, and development journalism ultimately improving the quality of tax-related coverage nationwide.

In June, the LRA held a similar training in partnership with the Western Journalists Network for over 30 reporters from Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties.
