Shenzhen Mayor Announces Plans to Invest in Liberia’s Agricultural Sector

Monrovia, Liberia: Liberia’s push to attract foreign investment in agriculture has received a significant boost as the Mayor of Shenzhen, China, Qin Weizhong, revealed plans to collaborate with the Liberian government to strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.

Mayor Qin made the announcement during a one-day visit to the Ministry of Agriculture in Monrovia, as part of a broader three-day official visit to Liberia. The high-level Chinese delegation, comprising 14 members, is exploring opportunities for economic cooperation in trade, agriculture, and cultural exchange.

“We can help address some of your agricultural challenges,” Mayor Qin stated during his meeting with officials. “We will do that under the framework of the Chinese government, aiming for mutual benefit and sustainable development.”

This visit marks the first time a mayor of Shenzhen—a city recognized as a global hub for innovation and technology—has visited Liberia. It follows up on discussions held during the China-Liberia Trade and Investment Forum in September 2024, on the margins of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Mayor Qin emphasized Shenzhen’s interest in supporting agricultural transformation, not just through trade and investment, but also by leveraging technology. “Information technology is at the heart of our development strategy. We are not only focused on consumption and trade, but also on integrating advanced technologies into agriculture,” he noted.

Responding to the mayor’s interest, Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Alexander Nuetah, presented key priorities and challenges confronting the sector. He highlighted the urgent need for improved irrigation systems, institutional capacity building, and greater support for mechanized farming.

“China continues to be Liberia’s strongest partner in agricultural development,” said Minister Nuetah. “With the support of the Chinese government, we plan to establish eight mechanization hubs to revolutionize farming practices across the country.”

Dr. Nuetah welcomed the visit as timely, calling for deeper collaboration to help Liberia achieve its long-term agricultural development goals.

In a symbolic show of commitment, the Shenzhen Agriculture and Food Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd. donated a Leafy Vegetable Seeder—a precision farming machine designed for accurate single-grain sowing—to the Ministry of Agriculture. The equipment is expected to support Liberia’s efforts toward modernizing its farming systems.

The ongoing engagements between Liberia and Shenzhen signal a promising chapter in the two countries’ growing partnership, with agriculture poised to become a key area of shared interest and mutual growth.
