Monrovia, Liberia: Ambassador Lewis G. Brown II, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has officially presented his Letters of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York.
During the presentation, Secretary-General Guterres welcomed Ambassador Brown and extended greetings to President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr.
He commended Liberia for its progress in building a vibrant democracy and maintaining peace following periods of civil conflict. Guterres acknowledged Liberia’s achievements despite challenges within the international system and expressed his commitment to cooperating with Ambassador Brown. He also sought Liberia’s support for the upcoming International Conference on Financing for Development.
In response, Ambassador Brown conveyed President Boakai’s best wishes and expressed gratitude for Guterres’ dedication to multilateralism. He informed the Secretary-General of Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in the elections scheduled for June 2025.
Brown emphasized that Liberia’s experience in conflict resolution positions it to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics. He reaffirmed Liberia’s readiness to play a more active role on the international stage.
Ambassador Brown’s appointment marks his return to the UN Permanent Mission, a position he previously held from 2016 under former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf until his recall in 2018 by former President George Weah.
Liberia’s pursuit of a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council aligns with its commitment to contributing to international peace and security.
The elections for the non-permanent seats are set for June 2025, with Liberia vying for one of the two seats allocated to the African Group for the 2026–2027 term. The African Union has endorsed Liberia’s candidacy, reflecting regional support for the nation’s aspirations.
