CARI Reclaims Pre-War Prominence as Liberia’s Agricultural Research Hub

Bong County: The Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) is regaining its reputation as one of West Africa’s leading agricultural research centers, according to the institution’s Director of Communications, Mr. Papa Morris.

In an interview with Radio Gbarnga on Tuesday, Mr. Morris disclosed that CARI, under the leadership of Director General Dr. Arthur Bob Karnuah, is actively restoring and enhancing the programs that once earned it regional acclaim prior to Liberia’s civil conflict.

“We are witnessing a steady return to CARI’s pre-war status,” Morris stated. “Significant strides have been made, especially in reviving our core research functions in livestock, crops, and agricultural innovation.”

Livestock and Crop Research Resurgence

Highlighting the progress, Mr. Morris revealed that CARI has successfully reactivated its livestock unit, acquiring hybrid pigs, goats, chickens, and sheep for laboratory and field-based research. These efforts aim to strengthen animal research across the country and support sustainable livestock development.

On the crop front, CARI has procured 10,000 Liberica coffee seedlings as part of a larger plan to produce over 30,000 seedlings for nationwide distribution. Additionally, more than 5,000 improved palm seedlings have been cultivated to boost palm oil production, and 31 hectares of cassava varieties have been planted to supply farmers with improved planting materials.

“These initiatives are critical to improving agricultural productivity and food security in Liberia,” Morris noted.

Launch of the “CARI Store”

In a further sign of growth, Mr. Morris announced that CARI will launch its first-ever retail outlet the “CARI Store” on June 1, 2025. The store will offer a variety of agricultural products developed by the institute, including seeds, planting materials, and other farming resources, making CARI’s innovations more accessible to farmers and the general public.

A Call to Farmers and Public Engagement

Mr. Morris encouraged farmers and citizens to take advantage of CARI’s growing portfolio of resources. “We’re inviting everyone involved in agriculture to engage with us. CARI’s revitalization is not just about research; it’s about empowering farmers and advancing Liberia’s agricultural economy,” he said.

About CARI

Established from the former Central Agricultural Experimental Station (CAES) in the 1980s, CARI evolved into Liberia’s apex public agricultural research body before its operations were disrupted by civil conflict. It has since been striving to reclaim its role as a center of excellence in applied and adaptive agricultural research.

With renewed leadership and strategic investment, CARI appears poised to once again serve as a cornerstone of Liberia’s development through science, innovation, and farmer-focused research.
