Authorities of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has reported to the Liberia Senate Transport Committee that birds feeding from nearby dumpsites have been causing significant disruptions to the power supply at Roberts International Airport (RIA).
The LAA is The Liberia Airport Authority mandated to regulate and promote civil aviation in Liberia, ensuring safety and orderly development, and implementing policies and objectives of the government.
Appearing before the committee on Wednesday, the authorities said the birds’ activities on the airport’s transformers, led to the electrical faults and intermittent power outages that affect airport operations.
On Sunday evening, a temporary power outage occurred at RIA, initially attributed to an electrical issue from the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) power grid. However, further investigations revealed that the presence of birds on the transformers was a contributing factor to the disruption.
The LAA has expressed concern over the proximity of dumpsites attracting large numbers of birds, exacerbating the problem.
To address this issue, the LAA is exploring various solutions, including deterring birds from settling on transformers and managing waste near the airport.
The authority emphasized the urgency of resolving the problem to ensure smooth airport operations and minimize further power supply disruptions.
The LAA is collaborating with LEC technicians to restore full power and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. Passengers and visitors have been assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore normal operations promptly and minimize delays.
